Some Documentaries to start out with: I cut out the "important" parts about the cichlids from Lake Tanganyika, from National Geographic's Jewel of the Rift and uploaded them in 4 video clips: Lake Tanganyika Part1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wonYRF4e4sI [video width=425 height=350:34a2...

You vacuum the sand substrate in the same way as gravel, just go easy on it, don't need to go that deep like in the gravel because most of the junk settles on top and cannot go to the bottom of the sand substrate. The junk finds it's way all the way to bottom of the gravel substrate thru those milli...

[I had one of these on a 29 gallon. Are they still noisy? Also, I though these were configured for a filter pad.... so you're saying they come with Floss pads as well? What I am trying to avoid is going to the store for that crappy carbon filled filter pad that most of these power filters come with...

I used some TetraTec Pro 500's, and their floss bags did a great job polishing the water. Emp400 would be my next choice, but I doubt you can optimize the AC500 with floss without the water bypassing the media.

That's not gonna happen if you have plenty of fish of each species, just make sure you have lots of broken territories/hiding places.

What about some Demasoni? They'll kick everyone's arse , specially of their own
Auratus
Johanni
Demasoni
Y. Labs
R. Zebras
would be a very hyper and entertaining tank. |

My first step would also be to reduce the light and food. You could also try to run a diatom filter every few days to clear up your water. You could also use a filter with floss to constantly polish your water. Regarding the fish losses I'd guess you over cleaned your filter/tank and you sent it bac...

Once the eggs were hatched (had heads and tails) I never tumbled them, just put them in floating breeder box. I only tumbled unhatched eggs and here I could imagine some losses but not with hatched ones. Try not to put them in a tumbler at all if you strip after day 10. |

The eggs should have eyes and tails around day 10, so it's pretty safe to strip after that. I've been stripping eggs around day 10-15 without losses for many Malawis.

The dems are nasty to each other, they don't care about other fish and other fish don't care about them, but they'll beat the hell out out each other, specially once they get to breed.

The L.T. get big and aggressive enough to put up with any mbuna, including the dems, and they're not aggressive towards other species. I would consider adding more dems (at least another 6) next to the 6 you have already to minimize the chance of a killing spree (disaster). I'd add some more red to ...
